<p>Eine <b>vulkanische Bombe</b> (früher: Auswürfling) ist ein bei einem <a href="Vulkanausbruch" title="Vulkanausbruch">Vulkanausbruch</a> <a href="Wurfparabel" title="Wurfparabel">ballistisch</a> <a href="Ejektion" title="Ejektion">herausgeschleuderter</a> <a href="Pyroklast" title="Pyroklast">Pyroklast</a> mit einem Durchmesser von <a href="Korngr%C3%B6%C3%9Fe" title="Korngröße">mehr als 64 mm</a>. Er besitzt gerundete Formen; die äußere Form und die Oberfläche weisen Anzeichen dafür auf, dass er während der Entstehung und des Transports geschmolzen war.

</p><p>In der älteren Literatur gilt jeder auf einer ballistischen Bahn herausgeschleuderte Pyroklast als <i>Bombe</i>; dagegen werden in der neueren Literatur eckige Pyroklasten dieser Größenklasse als <a href="Vulkanischer_Block" title="Vulkanischer Block">vulkanische Blöcke</a> bezeichnet. Pyroklastische Gesteine, die zu mehr als 75 % aus vulkanischen Bomben bestehen, werden <a href="Vulkanisches_Agglomerat" title="Vulkanisches Agglomerat">vulkanische Agglomerate</a> genannt.

<div class="mw-heading mw-heading2"><h2 id="Charakteristika">Charakteristika</h2></div>

<p>Vulkanische Bomben haben per Definition mehr als 64 mm Durchmesser, können jedoch auch mehrere Meter erreichen. Ihre Form ist meist ei- oder spindelförmig, da sie sich während des Fluges und der Erkaltung in der Luft um ihre eigene Achse drehen.

</p><p>Bei besonders gasreicher und zähflüssiger (<a href="Kiesels%C3%A4ure" class="mw-redirect" title="Kieselsäure">kieselsäure</a>reicher, „<a href="Saures_Gestein" class="mw-redirect" title="Saures Gestein">saurer</a>“) <a href="Lava" title="Lava">Lava</a> entstehen <b>Brotkrustenbomben.</b> Die durch die hohe Fördergeschwindigkeit abrupt in die Druck- und Temperaturverhältnisse der Erdoberfläche transportierte glutflüssige Lava <a href="Ausgasen" title="Ausgasen">gast</a> während des ballistischen Fluges heftig aus. Dadurch vergrößern sich zum einen bereits im Material vorhandene Blasen, zum anderen entstehen weitere neue. Die durch das Aufblähen verursachten <a href="Mechanische_Spannung" title="Mechanische Spannung">Spannungen</a> lassen an der Oberfläche, die durch die rasche Abkühlung bereits im Flug erstarrt, Risse entstehen, die den Lavabrocken das Erscheinungsbild eines <a href="Brotlaib" class="mw-redirect" title="Brotlaib">Brotlaibes</a> geben.

</p><p>Wegen ihres verhältnismäßig hohen Gewichts fallen die Bomben in der näheren Umgebung des <a href="Vulkan" title="Vulkan">Vulkans</a> zu Boden und richten daher im Vergleich zu anderen vulkanischen Begleiterscheinungen verhältnismäßig wenig Schaden an.

</p>

<div class="mw-heading mw-heading2"><h2 id="Auftreten">Auftreten</h2></div>

<p>Vulkanische Bomben treten bei nahezu allen Vulkanausbrüchen auf. Beispiel sind etwa die Vulkangebiete <a href="Island" title="Island">Islands</a> oder <a href="Italien" title="Italien">Italiens</a>. Zum Beispiel können Exemplare vulkanischer Bomben auf der italienischen Vulkaninsel <a href="Vulcano" title="Vulcano">Vulcano</a> am Gipfel der <i>Fossa</i> gefunden werden. Es handelt sich dabei um Auswürflinge der Eruptionsphase von 1888 bis 1890. Sie entstanden allerdings durch die Aufheizung <a href="Viskos" class="mw-redirect" title="Viskos">viskos</a> gewordener Bruchstücke älterer <a href="Vulkanite" class="mw-redirect" title="Vulkanite">Vulkanite</a>.

</p><p>In Deutschland sind vulkanische Bomben zum Beispiel häufig in der Umgebung des <a href="Laacher_See" title="Laacher See">Laacher Sees</a> sowie anderer Ausbruchszentren der <a href="Vulkaneifel" title="Vulkaneifel">Vulkaneifel</a> anzutreffen. Ein besonders großes Exemplar ist in <a href="Strohn" title="Strohn">Strohn</a> ausgestellt<sup id="cite_ref-1" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-1"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>1<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> (s. Foto).

<p>Vulkanische Bomben sind wahrscheinlich die Grundlage der vor etwa 2500 bis 3000 Jahren nahe den <a href="Mexiko" title="Mexiko">mexikanischen</a> Vulkanbergen der <a href="Sierra_de_los_Tuxtlas" title="Sierra de los Tuxtlas">Sierra de los Tuxtlas</a> entstandenen <a href="San_Lorenzo_Tenochtitlan#Kolossalköpfe" title="San Lorenzo Tenochtitlan">Olmekenköpfe</a>.
